Introduction

It is proposed to develop 2Nos. Sanitary Landfill sites near Gujranwala and Faisalabad cities for establishing a sustainable waste management system. The landfills will provide safe disposal of municipal solid waste collected from the Tahsils City and Sadar. The project will integrate the already planned 500 tons per day Material Recovery Facility (MRF) at each landfill site into a comprehensive solid waste management scheme, ensuring that all incoming waste is routed through the MRF before further treatment or disposal.

Salient Features

The proposed Sanitary Landfills will include the following components.

  • MRF: Waste segregation and recovery of useful products before it is dumped at a landfill site.
  • Landfill Cells: Engineered containment areas where residual waste is disposed of.
  • Leachate Collection and Treatment System: Collects and treats leachate to prevent groundwater contamination.
  • Gas Collection System: Captures landfill gas (methane) for energy production or flaring.
  • Liner System: Prevents contamination of soil and groundwater.
  • Cover System: Minimizes odor, controls vermin, and reduces rainwater infiltration.

Objectives

  • Safe disposal of waste, complying with environmental standards.
  • Recover useful products from municipal solid waste e.g., compost, RDF etc.
  • Minimization of adverse environmental impacts, such as groundwater contamination and greenhouse gas emissions.
