Introduction

As per census 2023, the population of the Punjab is 127.7 million out of which 51.96 million (41%) is living in urban centers and is more prone to issues associated with inadequate sewerage and storm water drainage. The province is facing urban sanitation challenges that affect public health, economic productivity and environmental sustainability. Most of the intermediate cities lack adequate sewerage and storm water drainage infrastructure resulting in variety of problems including poor hygiene, polluted water and disease outbreaks. Irrigation of food chain vegetables with raw sewage without treatment has adverse impacts on general environment and public health. The untreated wastewater is also contaminating ground and surface water besides affecting aquatic life.

The Government of Punjab’s (GoPb's) vision is to develop cities with upgraded and sustainable infrastructure connectivity for faster economic growth and higher productivity, with an enhanced opportunity for inclusive growth and sustained quality of life for its citizens.

This Program will be implemented in 66 intermediate cities of Punjab which is regarding the immediate measures/short term Sewerage Rehabilitation and to lay new sewer lines in unserved areas and also upgradation of Storm Water Drainage System for the problematic areas. 

Salient Features

The Program comprised of rehabilitation / new structures related to Sewerage, Storm Water Drainage, Road pavements and allied structures. The Program is design for horizon 2050.

Sewerage System includes:

• Rehabilitation of existing disposal stations and construction of new disposal stations.
• Replacement of old and outdated sewer lines.
• Laying of new sewer lines in unserved areas.
• Construction of Waste Water Treatment Plant where land is available.
• Solarization of disposal stations.

Storm Water Drainage System includes:

• Rehabilitation / Construction of collection drains
• Construction of Underground Storage Tank
• Construction of main drain in cities, where Underground Storage Tank not possible.
• Construction of Pump House.

Road pavement and Allied Structures include:

• Restoration of Road pavement in affected areas.
• Laying of Tuff Tiles for restoration in congested areas
• Construction of green areas wherever possible.
