In a consultative session organized today (11-01-2024) by the Punjab Municipal Development Fund Company, discussions centered around the existing standards for municipal infrastructure, building codes, and construction standards for climate resilience. Held in Lahore, the event saw active participation from key entities, including the Punjab Affordable Housing Program, Punjab Disaster Management Authority, UN-Habitat, Communication & Works Department, Punjab Infrastructure Development Authority, The Urban Unit and National Disaster Risk Management Fund and others.
Ms. Rizwana Anjum, SPO-ESM of PMDFC presented the agenda at the start of the session. The session yielded crucial recommendations to address environmental impacts and enhance climate resilience. Dr. Ahmed Javed Qazi, Secretary LG&CDD in his address said that it is very important to develop climate-resilient municipal infrastructure. Sec LG&CDD also acknowledged The Punjab Cities Program's positive impact on sixteen Municipal Committees. Mr. Parvez Iqbal, Chairman Board, emphasized the role of urbanization in environmental effects, advocating for better planning to mitigate issues like urban flooding. Zahid Aziz, MD PMDFC, presented initiatives, including the successful completion of a pilot project for floating wetlands for wastewater treatment. Punjab Cities Program initiatives reducing carbon emissions including underground storage reservoirs for rainwater harvesting and urban landscape improvement were also discussed. The transition of disposal stations to solar energy in Punjab's cities was highlighted. In the plenary session, participants presented their recommendations. The comprehensive efforts underscored a commitment to sustainable development and climate resilience in the region.
